I love fishing in winter.
It can be hard to find the motivation on a cold, dark morning, but once outside the cold air knocks the slumber from you and puts a distinct spring in your step.
Providing you are dressed appropriately and have adequate tea making facilities to hand, a winter’s day is to be embraced not avoided.
I always favour running water over still in the winter. A pond can seem sullen and lifeless when the water temperature plunges yet the steady movement of a river suggests that life is still functioning beneath the surface.
After a good day, not necessarily fish-filled though a good catch always helps, the glow of your skin and the prickles in your toes as they defrost in front of the fire are simply heavenly sensations. Add a bowl of steaming stew and a glass of something warming and life doesn’t get much better….
